The upstream sector includes the searching for potential underground or underwater crude oil and natural gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and subsequently drilling and operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface.

Description: "I learned the ins and outs of a drilling rig, and acquired lots of hands on experience out in the field. I was able to work with people from all different backgrounds in 5 man teams. I used my math background to do calculations that were used to perform tests including: formation testing, pressure testing, BOP testing, etc.. I worked mainly with the water based drilling fluid, or mud, that we used in the drilling process. With the aid of a mud engineer, we kept the fluid within a certain viscosity and weight range needed to complete the well. In order to do this, multiple tests were done and chemicals were added to the mud. I also learned a great deal of safety, and attended safety trainings and meetings."
